The SEKEM Initiative

The SEKEM Initiative was founded to realize the vision of sustainable human development. Its mission is the development of the individual, society and environment through a holistic concept which integrates economic, societal and cultural life. In 1977 Ibrahim Abouleish started to revitalize an untouched part of the Egyptian desert (70 hectares) 60 km northeast of Cairo using Biodynamic agricultural methods. Soon after a new sustainable and self-sufficient community was born, where people from different cultures and religions could live and work together developing their own potential. Believing in education as the foundation of holistic human development and advancement of all, SEKEM grounded its schools and a university. The SEKEM School includes a primary, preparatory, and secondary school for 800 pupils. The SEKEM University Heliopolis University, with more than 3000 new students per year, strives for conscious Sustainable Development, economic solidarity, social responsibility, and environmental balance in Egypt and the world. Over the years, SEKEM became the umbrella of a multifaceted agro-industrial group of companies and NGOs. Today, SEKEM is regarded as a leading social business worldwide and has received outstanding prizes and recognition for its work.

Wahat Farm in the Bahareya Oasis

In 2008 Sekem established the Wahat farm, in the Bahareya Oasis, 500 km southwest of Cairo, surrounded by a beautiful desert mountain landscape, with the aim of bringing 1000 ha of desert land to life by restoring the ecosystem and building a new community. Based on SEKEM’s vision, the SEKEM Wahat initiative is primarily relying on biodynamic cultivation of desertificated land and applies integrative and holistic perspective of sustainable development in every single activity.

Experience music at the desert's doors

Through The Desert Sound 2026, the participants will experience Egypt also through a sonic experience guided by musician and composer Isaac de Martin (IKE). From the silence of the White Desert to the bustle of Cairo and the biodynamic oasis of SEKEM that harmonizes the opposite, participants will be invited to notice sounds, silences, echoes and rhythms, rediscovering how nature and human presence tend to create harmony.

The Desert Sound is not simply a trip to Egypt. It is an invitation to slow down, to listen consciously and to rediscover the world through sound. It is open to non-musicians and musicians too. For those who want to learn traditional music, private lessons with professional musicians and collective music lessons will be organized (costs not included).
